Timber Doors for Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas
For listed buildings and properties in conservation areas, door replacement follows similar rules to window replacement — the replacement must match the original in material, profile and character, and consent is required before the work is carried out.

Timber vs Composite & uPVC Doors
Composite and uPVC doors are cheaper upfront and lower maintenance. For some properties and budgets, that’s the right answer. But for London period properties — and particularly for listed buildings and conservation areas — timber remains the better choice.
Timber can be repaired. A swollen frame can be planed, a rotted section spliced, a failed joint re-glued. Composite and uPVC doors cannot be repaired in the same way — when they fail, they’re replaced. A well-maintained timber door will outlast a composite or uPVC door by decades.
For listed buildings and conservation areas, timber is often the only material planning will approve. Conservation officers across London almost universally require timber for door replacements in designated areas.

Do I need planning permission to replace a front door in a conservation area?
In most conservation areas, yes — replacing a front door is not permitted development and requires planning permission. The replacement door will need to match the original in material, profile and character. We advise on requirements and provide supporting documentation for applications.
What timber species do you use for doors?
We work with a range of hardwood and softwood species depending on the application, budget and client preference. Hardwoods such as Sapele, Accoya and Oak are commonly used for front doors due to their durability and stability. We advise on the right choice at the consultation stage.
Can timber doors be fitted with modern locks and security hardware?
Yes — timber doors can be fitted with multipoint locking systems, high-security cylinders and any other hardware specification. Security need not be compromised by choosing timber. We advise on hardware at the specification stage.
How long does a timber door last?
A well-made and properly maintained timber door will last 50 years or more. Maintenance involves repainting or re-staining every 5 to 8 years and keeping glazing seals and draught strips in good condition. A neglected paint finish is what allows moisture in — the timber itself is not the weak point.
Can you match an existing door design?
Yes. Where we’re replacing one door in a property with others that need to match — or where planning requires the replacement to match the original — we manufacture to the existing design. We work from measurements, photographs and drawings of the original.
